THE NEW ORLEANS SCHOOL FACILITY PROJECT
Founded in 2009, NOSFP is a non-profit organization with
a mission to promote equitable access to public school buildings for all public
school programs in Orleans Parish.쯳pan>
The Project is currently working with community groups,
public officials, business leaders, charter school leaders and advocates, and a
broad cross-section of the general public to recommend and establish a
mechanism for equitable access쯳pan>to
publicly owned properties and find and implement solutions to long-standing
problems related to public school facility management, maintenance and repair.
Across the country, public charter schools struggle to
gain access to high quality facilities with the appropriate amount of space to
educate their students. ﳰan>A majority of
charter schools are not able to use public school buildings even in Cities
where those buildings stand vacant.쯳pan>In
New Orleans, we have a unique opportunity to create a new way of doing
things.쯳pan>We are fortunate that the
federal government is providing an enormous amount of financial assistance to
repair historic school buildings and build many new facilities for our
children. However, in order to ensure that we do not squander this opportunity,
we must find new ways to fund acquisition, development, renovation,
maintenance, and capital repairs in the future.꼯span>We must distinguish the role of the property owner from the school
tenants and clearly define how charter schools and others will utilize these
buildings. ﳰan>
